The morning air was cool and refreshing, Buki was happy and content on his sun lounger and Esperance and Godriva were enjoying a breakfast of Pop Tarts, peaches and coffee. From their rooftop vantage point, the sisters were looking out towards the ocean beyond the jungle. It was enshrouded in a mist that the sun had yet to burn away.

“How are you feeling today?” Esperance asked.

“Better today,” Godriva answered. “I slept well.”

“I know. There was another earthquake during the night and you did not stir.”

“There was another quake?” Godriva asked. “How bad?”

“It was much like the first one. It didn’t last long.”

“I can’t believe I slept through it.”

“Neither can I.”

“Did it wake Buki?”

“Yes. But he didn’t cry. I cuddled him for a while and then he went back to sleep.”

Godriva’s throat was still raw from all the screaming during her breakdown of the previous day, but other than that she really was feeling better. She felt as though a malignant force had been exorcised from her. She felt cleansed.

“We will find a way off this island, you know,” said Esperance.

“I know.”

“Something will turn up. You’ll see.”

And at that, a new and mysterious voice echoed around the facility grounds.

“Hello! Can you hear me?”

Esperance and Godriva jumped, sending Pop Tarts flying.

“What was that?” Godriva yelped as she clung onto her sister.

“No idea!”

“Hello! Hello! I can see you on the CCTV camera. If you can hear me, please wave!”

Esperance and Godriva stared at each other with hope flashing in their eyes, both daring to believe that perhaps, just perhaps, salvation had finally come. They looked up at the CCTV camera, the one rising up from the roof. The one they had assumed was, like all the others, dead. Esperance gave a nervous wave.

And after a few seconds’ pause: “Great!” This voice, despite booming through the loudspeaker system like a crack of doom, sounded friendly. “That’s awesome! Say, can you speak English? Give me another wave if you can!”

This time, both Esperance and Godriva waved, their faces now blazing with promise and excitement.

“Cool! Okay, hi there! I’m Cynthia and I’m talking to you from Arizona in the US! Hope you’re both okay there! And the baby too, obvs! She’s a cutie! Or he! Anyway! We’ve only just got the CCTV and the speakers back online and we’re working to get the other stuff up and running too! We’re gonna come and get you off that island…”

The two sisters grabbed each other in celebration and screamed. However, it was premature.

“…but we need you to do something for us first! Have you guys been getting some, like, earthquakes by any chance?”

Esperance and Godriva responded with frantic nodding.

“Yeah. There’s this big machine under the ground that’s causing that, and it needs to be stabilised, and to do that we need you to reboot the power for the whole site, like in Jurassic Park! Then we’ll be able to get you guys outta there! So, can you do that for me?”

Esperance gave a thumbs-up to the CCTV camera.

“Great
